Link Exchanging

In order to have your website rank high with search engines, having inbound links from other sites is a must. However there are some things you must be careful of before you start signing up for link exchanges and setting up links from other sites.

First of all, reciprocal linking is out. Reciprocal linking is when two different sites link to each other. Back in the day, search engines such as Google valued these links, especially if the links were on highly ranked sites. Once this method started getting abused, search engines started demoting sites with reciprocal links. Now days the best links are one-way links from a high rank sites, and yes, these are the hardest to get. One work around is 3-way linking, where Site 1 links to Site 2, then Site 2 links to Site 3, and then Site 3 links to Site 1.

With link exchanges and 3-way linking you have to pay attention to what sites your linking to, and who’s linking to you. It’s crucial that only sites that are relevant to your site are being linked. Search engines compare the content on linked sites and then value each link based on the relevancy of the websites.
